Skimmer Pools

The term “skimmer pool” comes from a device called skimmer. This unit is used to collect the surface layer of the water so it can be filtered and treated. The skimmer is under the top edge of the swimming pool. The system carries the water through the skimmer to the filtration unit & delivers back after active filtration on the opposite side, which means the water travels vertically.

Pool skimmers are found in every pool and are considered one of the most important features. The rectangular openings located on the side of an in-ground pool are referred to as built-in skimmers. There are also robotic skimmers available or automatic skimmers hung from the sides of an above ground pool. Depending on the size of the pool, you may have one or more skimmers installed.

Pool skimmers are designed to draw water from the surface and suck it through the pool’s filtration system. About the top 1/8 inch of water is drawn into the skimmer helping remove the contaminants and debris such as sunscreen, hair and leaves from the pool before they sink to the bottom. This occurs without most swimmers even noticing as the suction power is so discrete.

Pool skimmers are the starting point of pool circulation, and act as a gateway to your pool’s filtration system.

Pool pump sucks water into the skimmers & as the water passes through the skimmer basket, it’s cleared of larger debris that would cause a blockage if it made it all the way to your pump or filter. It also allows the filter to do its job of pulling the smaller contaminants out so the water that makes its way back into your pool through the returns is cleaner.
